Vintage 1922 army medal. Track medal was won by John C. Stanford, a First Sergeant in the U.S. Army's Tank Corps during its initial formation at Ft. Meade. Stanford served under General George S. Patton and Col. H.L. Cooper during WWII and retired with honorable service as a Major in 1948. Brass colored medal is cast with a sprinter before an American flag, decorated with a sprig of foliage on the left and a blank banner running across the border on the upper half. Reverse is engraved with Stanford's name and the year 1922 as well as Robbinsco/Attleboro maker's mark. Measures 1.25" in diameter. Suspended on a pair of rings from a red, white and blue striped pin-on ribbon to an overall length of 3". Weighs 21 grams or 3/4 oz. Fading to ribbon and adhesive residue to verso near the pin, else near fine.
