Original 2 April 1861 U.S. Army provision document signed by 2nd Lt. William E. Burnet, son of Texas President David G. Burnet, written from Fort Cobb, Indian Territory. Burnet had joined the U.S. Army in 1857, but resigned his commission to join the Confederate Army on 17 July 1861. He rose in rank to Colonel of Artillery under Major General Dabney Maury, and was killed in action on 31 March 1865 at the Battle of Spanish Fort, Alabama. Excerpts from a letter by General Maury to Colonel Burnet's father on 2 April 1865 include ''...he was shot through the head and instantly killed. We buried him with honors of war yesterday. I had gone with Colonel William E. Burnet to the Fort...an hour afterwards, a dispatch announced to me his death...His loss is irreparable.'' Document measures 7.75" x 9.75". In near fine condition, with usual docketing on verso.
