Benjamin Waterhouse, the physician who brought Edward Jenner's safer smallpox vaccine to the U.S., signed first edition of his book, "A Prospect of Exterminating the Small Pox II" published in Cambridge, MA: 1802. Volume bears Waterhouse's autograph inscription to his colleague, Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchill, founder of the United States' first free smallpox vaccine clinic. Inscription to the title page reads, "Saml L Mitchill / From the Author / Washington, Feb. 24 / 1803." Final leaf of the appendix is absent, some paper loss to the last four leaves and toning, otherwise very good condition. Accompanied by a contemporary dustjacket and slipcase.
