Ludwig Bemelmans hand-drawn, signed sketch within ''Madeline's Rescue'' published by Viking: New York: 1953. Upon the half title page, the author and illustrator renders an original sketch of a child holding an object overhead while seated inside what appears to be a boat, which would have come in handy for the title character, who nearly drowned when she fell into the river in the story. Beneath the sketch, Bemelmans' autograph inscription reads: ''To my godson / with love / Ludwig''. Light foxing and soiling to pages of 9'' x 12'' book, bound in red cloth boards and containing illustrated pastedowns and endpapers. Moderate paper loss and tearing with tape repairs to original unclipped dustjacket. Overall very good. An extraordinarily rare original sketch by Bemelmans, signed.
