Stephen Sewall document signed in ink ''Stephen Sewall'' as recorder for Essex County, thirteen years after he served as Clerk in the Court of ''Oyer & Terminer'' in Salem Town, site of the ''Salem Witch Trials'' that swept through the town in 1692-93. The lethal paranoia and trials resulted in nineteen people ultimately being executed for witchcraft. Handwritten document pertains to the sale of land by John Massey and is signed by him and by John Phippen, Timothy Hurlbutt, and John Newman as Justice of the Peace. Sewall's signature appears on verso, ''Steph Sewall''. The remnants of a red wax seal are present near the right edge. Single page document on card-style stationery measures 7.5'' x 12''. Separation to folds and expected toning, with a chip at the close of the document near center not affecting signature. Overall in good condition, commensurate with age.
