Dwight D. Eisenhower WWII autograph letter signed as a General. From Bushy Park, London, he writes to his wife, Mamie, dating the letter simply 9 May [1944]. He tells of his regret he'll be missing their son John's graduation from West Point on 6 June. Eisenhower's scheduling conflict is that he would be conducting the Normandy landings that day. Letter reads in part: ''Darling / This afternoon I start another series of short trips that will keep me on the jump for some days...Yesterday I wrote to Johnny. I told him how sorry I am to miss his graduation ceremony [from West Point on D-Day] - (incidentally he told me the members of the 1st class would prefer me to any other as the big shot that day) - and I said also he'd have to take my good wishes as a graduation present. The Luger pistol is to be his, but I doubt that he'll like it! But it's a nice souvenir! To tell the truth I'd even be willing to make the graduation 'speech' in order to be present. I hope you, dad, mother, and auntie (if she's well enough) will have a grand time. Yesterday I had a 'picture taking' session again. One was a 'talking movie' for the 5th War Loan Drive. At first I flatly refused, but I received such urgent requests (together with a flattering assurance that my previous efforts along the same line has been so beneficial) that I had to do it. I hate such sessions! Anyway, you'll probably see me in some movie making a 'speech' - but it's only 1 minute long...I miss you dreadfully. Always your / Ike''. 2pp. on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
