Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as Lt. General. From London, on 31 October 1942 he sends a letter to his wife, Mamie, discussing his newfound fame and devotion to her. It reads in part: ''Darling:...Today has been one of such frequent conferences & opportunities that my mind is nothing but a blank - I'm talked out! I find myself smoking incessantly - all the time & I try to cut down & one hour later find I've burned up more cigarettes than usual...Yesterday I received notice from the Abilene Rotary Club that I'd been elected to Honorary Membership. The town may be only 4000 - but it's MY town, and I was d--- happy to know they'd thought of such a thing...I wonder what a lot of people who now suddenly remember they knew me when - would say if a big reverse came to me. Possibly they'd not even wonder whether it was my fault, but would say 'I told you so!' Heavens, I do not mean to be cynical; I'm quite overwhelmed to know how many people have taken the trouble to send me a cheery & encouraging word! But manifestly not all of them can be completely sincere, else they would have written some of their nice words BEFORE my name got in the newspapers. Capt. Bill Tucker ADMITS he'd do better work as a major. Everyone seems to feel that just one more personal promotion is all that's needed to lick the Hun. That's one reason that people - like Butch & T.J. are so valuable to me. They never even think of promotion. Well sweetie-pie - the hour grows late. Thank the lord I have no engagement tonight (last eve went to dinner for Mrs Roosevelt, given by Ambassador Winant) Tomorrow noon lunch w/ Adm Stark - yesterday lunch w/ PM - & so it goes!!! I'll try to write tomorrow; in fact I like to grab off a few minutes very often so you'll always know you're the only person I'm in love with. (Even if I do end sentences with prepositions) I've liked some - been somewhat intrigued by others - but haven't been in love with anyone else & don't want any other wife. Always / Ike''. With original envelope postmarked 31 October 1942. It was during this time that Eisenhower reportedly began an affair with his female driver Kay Summersby. 4pp. letter measures 7'' x 9''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
