Anheuser-Busch founder Adolphus Busch typed letter signed as president of the beer company and of his new endeavor, the Diesel Motor Company of America. Letter, dated 9 February 1899 appears on Anheuser-Busch St. Louis stationery. The year after acquiring exclusive rights to diesel engine patents in North America, the Busch writes to steel magnate John Scullin, founder of Scullin-Gallagher Iron and Steel Company, also based in St. Louis, offering him stock in his promising new diesel company. Letter reads, ''My dear Sir:- I have reserved for you $10,000 stock in the Diesel Motor Company of America...I shall be very glad if you accept this block...The Diesel stock is selling at $160 in Germany to-day, and this great premium only on account of the anticipated profits after the machines are once properly introduced. The general saying in Europe is, that within a few years, it will rain gold on the heads of holders of Diesel stock, and the prospects are very promising that this will come to pass. With kind regards, I am, Very truly, [signed] Adolphus Busch''. Busch and Scullin were among a handful of the wealthiest men in St. Louis at the turn of the century. Single-page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Light toning and creasing, else near fine.
