Rudyard Kipling autograph letter signed, dated 31 May 1906 on his personal ''Burwash Etchingham / Bateman's Burwash Sussex'' stationery, where Kipling lived from 1902 until his death. Just a year after writing this letter, Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Letter is presumably addressed to a close friend as it is written in a conversational tone: ''Dear Mrs. Leonard: Carrie [Kipling's wife] bids me say that she is quite as disappointed as Violet but hadn't realized when she spoke lightly of being able to come that...she can't leave the children down here. I saw John just now on the lead -- Stella legging it beside the big horse -- He looked rather fine but yesterday when he was off for a gallop on his own and didn't know that I was looking at him he looked in his big [?] not exactly like a cowboy seen through the wrong end of a telescope. He says riding is 'a superb thing.' Elsie of course is a rather accomplished horsewoman...I don't know when we've enjoyed -- really enjoyed -- a night so much as our happy time with you. Ever sincerely yours / Rudyard Kipling''. Letter is on two sheets, each measuring 4'' x 6'', framed with a portrait of Kipling to an overall size of 23'' x 13''. Very good to near fine.
