Famed American composer John Philip Sousa, master of the patriotic march, autograph musical quotation signed of the ''Foshay Memorial March''. Sandwiching the handwritten musical score, Sousa writes, ''John Philip Sousa / The Foshay Memorial March / 1929''. Written for the dedication of the Foshay skyscraper in Minneapolis, Sousa performed the march at the event. However, though Wilbur Foshay promised Sousa a handsome sum, his check bounced and Foshay became implicated in business fraud amidst the stock market crash. Sousa then prohibited the playing of the march so long as Foshay's debt remained outstanding, which it did until 1988 when a group of Minnesota investors repaid the debt to Sousa's estate. Card measures 4.5'' x 3.5'', framed with a photo of the composer to an overall size of 21'' x 16.5''. Light toning, else near fine.
