Signed and contemporaneously signed copy of Congressman Bill Young's speech to Congress one day before President Nixon resigned. A loyal supporter, Young tries to put Nixon's achievements in perspective, stating in part: ''...My respect for Richard Nixon and the many unselfish ways in which he served his country is in no way diminished...With so many outstanding accomplishments to his credit, then how do we explain this dramatic heartbreaking end to such an illustrious public career? There is so much involved in this national tragedy that it staggers the imagination. It is impossible to effectively explain how circumstances of this magnitude could have gotten out of control -- but there is no doubt -- get out of control they did...Maybe Richard Nixon was destined to be a sacrifice to teach us that Presidents, although expected to perform super-human tasks, are themselves only human...Maybe, in God's plan, Richard Nixon was destined to be a sacrifice to teach us that even our Government, which is by far the best and by far the strongest of any in the world -- that even our Government, as strong as it is, can be damaged or even destroyed if its own people constantly chip away at its very foundations...'' 2pp., the first on Young's Congressional letterhead and the second signed at bottom, ''Bill Young - 8-8-'74''.
