Orson Welles typed letter signed from 1941, the year of the release of masterpiece ''Citizen Kane,'' which he wrote, produced and starred in. Letter is dated 30 July 1941, less than three months after the film opened to nationwide controversy for Welles' depiction of a megalomaniac publishing mogul clearly fashioned after William Randolph Hearst. Letter is typed upon Welles' Mercury Theatre stationery and reads in part, ''Dear Miss Bender: I just can't understand why I haven't answered your letters...I could fill several pages but I know that you will understand that I would not have a chance to answer other people and do my work if I did so...I am working very hard on three new pictures which I hope you will like as well if not better than 'Citizen Kane'. The best address for Joseph Cotton is my office as he is going to act in my next two pictures and will be here for some months...'' Signed ''Orson Welles'' in red pencil. Single-page letter measures 8.5'' x 11.5'' and is attractively matted and framed beside a publicity still of Welles and the original mailing envelope to an overall size of 24.75'' x 23.5''. Faint toning and creasing to letter, else fine.
