Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed as Major General during WWII. He writes to his wife, Mamie, dating the letter ''Sept. 1 (I hope)''. His rank as Major General was temporary when issued in March of 1942 and made permanent here on 30 August. He writes of it: ''Darling - During the past few days I've seen my office only as I whizzed by - but today I should be here for several hours. Last night when I got home from a long trip I found awaiting me a notification that I'd been appointed a reg. Maj-Gen. by the President. That practically floored me...Seems odd to try to think of myself as a permanent Maj. Gen. Have always considered my present rank as just a happenstance of war! Subconsciously, I think, I've always expected to come back to you as a Colonel - & go off for a nice quiet rest - a long rest! - Well, I must say I'm extremely proud of the nice things the Pres't...had to say about me...Tonight though, I think I'll have a a really good sleep. Don't have to get up early tomorrow. I hope not - I love you heaps - don't forget!! Always your - Ike''. 2pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Creasing, else near fine.
