Arthur Ashe's 1986 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which would end in just 7 years. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his brief but voluminous entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. In tennis, Ashe here mentions his commitments to attend a Texas Tennis Association dinner, a tennis writers' luncheon and the Jackie Robinson Awards at the Waldorf Astoria. On his busy calendar, Ashe writes, "ML King Dinner", "Duke Ellington Mtg.", "Anti Apartheid Rally", "Earl Morrow tournament", and "Knick Game". He also attends the "Shriver-Schwarzenegger Marriage", a "Black Retreat" and makes note of his "Hall of Fame enshrinement". He keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, marking the day of the Super Bowl, World Series ("THE METS WIN!!"), Davis Cup, "Mike Tyson-Mitch Green" fight, U.S. Open, and the National League pennant game: "GREATEST BASEBALL GAME EVER METS 7 ASTROS 6 / 16 innings". He lists hundreds of contacts and their phone numbers, including OJ Simpson, Senator Bill Bradley, David Dinkins, Martin King (MLK's son), John McEnroe and many more. He also notes that Chuck McKinley died and the anniversary of his mother's death, who died when Ashe was only six years old. Medically, Ashe reminds himself of a fasting blood test, and a separate slip of his personal stationery is included on which he lists his blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. He also makes a note regarding the documents required for adopting his daughter. Other notes include a resolution to "'Battle it' double parked" and a mention of "Great Colors Beautiful Day". Thousands of notations in Ashe's hand appear in the planner, with almost every single page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book filled out. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with light overall wear and a tear to a page in January. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
