Partial letter written by an unidentified Union soldier shortly after enlisting. Letter is datelined ''Washington Nov 13/61.'' Soldier describes proceedings: ''...Went out on deck and found that we were anchored opisite New York City. After putting in four or five hours there singing and eating crackers and meat...the boat moved ashore and landed us at the foot of fifteenth street. There we were received by three or four hundred citizens of New York...I had the pleasure of seeing Commadore G. Aringham, the hero of Hateras. The boys called on him for a speech...they took us down to the ferry and we crossed over to Jersey City...we made noise enough to let the Jerseyites know we were there. When we got outside of the city we had to go up a grade in the road and the locomotive got stuck so we had to get out and push...In a short time I was woke up by the boys hollering and the stopping of the train at New Brunswick...'' 4pp. ink letter fragment on patriotic stationery measuring 5'' x 8''. Letter has soiling, and is inexpertly repaired with tape at folds. In fair condition.
