Arthur Ashe's 1978 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his life, which, unbeknownst to him, would change dramatically the very next year with a career-curtailing heart attack. Ashe notes various tennis matches throughout the year, including "Wimbledon", "French Open", "U.S. Open" and "Australian Open", and records his matches with various opponents towards the end of the year. In November he writes, "beat [Victor] Amaya 2-6; 7-6; 6-2…beat Solomon [?] 2-6; 7-5; 6-1". He also attended various tennis and charity-related functions, including commitments with the ATP and USTA, an ATA Celebrity match, and a meeting with Head brand sporting equipment, likely pertaining to the line of tennis gear he launched with them. His year included heavy travel and media appearances as well as his first wedding anniversary with his wife Jeanne. He also makes a note to himself for "voter registration". Notations in Ashe's hand appear on roughly half of the pages of the spiral-bound "Day-At-A-Glance" book. Features a brown faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". In very good condition, with wear to cover edges. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
