8pp. letter from Charles S. Ramsay of the 44th Ohio Infantry Band. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Camp Piatt Nov 3rd, 1861,'' letter reads in part: '...How I should like to be at home with you today and attend church...I have attended the meetings in camp but I do not like our chaplain. he cannot preach...There are nine of us sitting in this tent some reading others writing. some...signing, others talking...Five Companies left under the command of Major Mitchell just before dinner for the mouth of Pains Creek 17 miles above here. they are expecting to have a fight...there are three or four regiments near there and some more moving in that direction. the Rebel Gen. Floyd with his army are within three miles of them...Colonel Gilbert arrived with Lieut. Col. Wilson yesterday. the officers are all anxious to retain Col. Wood...they know him and know that he is capable. Col. Gilbert is to be tried yet, Col. Wilson is very much pleased with him. he was in the three months service in Western Va. And I presume knows something about the country. yet he lacks a military education...The Rebels opened fire on our men at Gauley Bridge day before yesterday. nothing but cannon were used...near every one of their shots fell short. several of our shells exploded right at their cannons. they had nothing but round shot to fire. Yesterday they were fighting in close quarters...'' The 44th Ohio Infantry served primarily in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. The regiment contributed to a rout of Confederate forces at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Charles S. Ramsay mustered into service on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 October 1862 at Covington, Kentucky. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
