6pp. letter from Charles S. Ramsey of the 44th Ohio Infantry Band. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''Camp Piatt / Nov 19th, 1861,'' letter reads in part: ''...We constructed a large heater between our two tents for to keep us warm...The box with Hez's boots & etc. arrived yesterday...Your little letter, though old, I was glad to get for I do like to read them. I often read your letters over...John Hawkin's wife sent him two nice large cakes and some nice fresh butter. He divided with the members of the band and we had a regular feast for dinner...Troy, Cedarville and Yellow Springs have all sent blankets...We are getting so that we play very well and are highly praised by the officers for the progress we have made yet there are some in the band that will never make players. l see by the weekly news received by Andy that Al and Gertie were married on the 13th inst...I presume by the time this reaches you that they will have returned and probable be settled in that dear little home of ours. Don't I wish that it was we that were going into it...I hear the band of the Fifth Virginia Regiment playing for dress parade and I presume we will soon hear the call and have to go out and play...They are busily engaged in shoeing up the horses of the regiment. It is rumored that we will leave here in a day or two...a person cannot believe anything...' The 44th Ohio Infantry served primarily in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. The regiment contributed to a rout of Confederate forces at Dutton's Hill, Kentucky. Charles S. Ramsay mustered into service on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 October 1862 at Covington, Kentucky. Letter measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
