ALS from POW Guard Franklin Marshall of the 104th Ohio Infantry, Company H, to his father. Accompanied by cover. Datelined ''Camp Burnside / Indianapolis Ind / Feb the 22nd /64,'' letter reads in part: ''...I am well with the exceptions of a very hard cold on my lungs which causes me to cough considerable I caught it on guard last night then had to go to the city a grand review with the regt to day & got stuffed up with dust Since I last wrote you the rebs has tryed tunneling again but was caught at it they had dug down about eighty feet & had dug under about 120 feet they sware now that they will brake out they say if their own men had not of betrayed them they would of got out before this they say if they damed yankies wer in their they would not stay any time for they would all stick together...The old Ind. Regt is coming & going every day now that are reinlisting very fast I wouldnt wonder if we our co would go to our head quarters in Wis before long I understand that their is 16 Co more comeing here this week...'' Marshall mustered into Company H on 30 August 1862 and was transferred to the 23rd Veteran Reserve Corps, Company C. He mustered out on 13 July 1865 at Saint Paul, Minnesota. The 104th Ohio saw action at Resaca, Dallas, New Hope Church, Kennesaw, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Franklin and Wilmington. Ink letter runs 3pp. and measures 5'' x 8''. Fine condition.
