ALS from an unidentified Union soldier to his father. Datelined ''Rec. Ship / North Carolina May 4th 1864,'' letter reads in part: ''...there is an awful croud on board now over twenty five hundred they come in about fifty a day there is a draft most every day or they would be soon crouded out. Old Cap. Mead made a farewell speech to the men the other day. he hadent much to say. he is not much of a speaker. he is going to take charge of the Navel Recruiting office in Cherry St. New York. Cap. Thompson is now in command of the North Carolina. the leader of the N. C. Band was drounded the other day in Catherine slip haveing walked over board...we are allowed to wash our face now every morning on the cob dock which we could not do before. But we cannot wash clothes so we are all good and lousey. If it was not for the line we should get so lazy we could not walk as it is they keep us all the time active. We have got about five hundred soldiers on the cob dock in Barracks, seamen out of the army it is quite sport here killing Greybacks they got so big some of them that they show fight and we have to tackel them with Marling spikes before they will give in...'' 3pp. pencil letter measures 5'' x 8''.
