Broadside of the 19 April 1663 proclamation issued by King Charles II commanding all Roman Catholic priests ''...to depart this kingdom by a day...shipped and sent away for foreign parts...'' Anti-Catholic sentiment was widespread in England at the time and would culminate in the Exclusion Bill Crisis, a controversy pertaining to Charles brother James' conversion to Catholicism and its implications for the heirs to the throne. Fifteen years later, King Charles II would be a victim of the so-called ''Popish Plot,'' a hoax in which he was led to believe that Jesuit priests were out to kill him. 10.25'' x 14.5'' broadside is printed by John Bill and Christopher Barker. Mounted to paper to an overall size of 11.25'' x 18.25''. Upper and lower halves had detached prior to mounting. Toning, creasing and some paper loss along detachment line. Slight irregular trimmed edges. Very good condition.
