Civil War General Oliver O. Howard typed letter signed. The ''Christian general,'' such named because his policy decisions were rooted in deep religious conviction, writes, ''...good will...really existed as we well know between the fighting men of the North and South...the folly of unpreparedness for war. The loss of life...that follows any unsuccessful strife is appalling, mostly due to the want and knowledge of hygene [sic], and of the self-care in the field and in camps...[signed] Oliver Otis Howard...'' 7'' x 6.75'' undated letter is very good.
