Alexander Stephens autograph note signed. The former Vice President of the Confederacy hand-writes Alexander Pope's famous quote from ''An Essay on Man.'' It reads: '''Honor and shame from no condition rise. Act well your part, there all honor lies / Alexander H. Stephens / [?] of Ga. / Liberty Hall / Crawfordville Ga / 23rd Oct 1881.'' After serving a prison sentence in the aftermath of the Civil War, Stephens served as Congressman from Georgia. Single-page card measures 4'' x 2.25''. Toning, with faint vertical creasing near the right edge and adhesive residue to verso, else near fine.
