Four page Civil War soldier's letter by Corp. Homer S. Sackett of the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery, Co. H, on Christian Commission stationery dated 9 June 1864 at Cold Harbor. Letter reads in part, ''...I am still a member of Co. H...Ever since the first of June we have been under fire. No real fighting since the first, but where the shot & shell fly round quite thick. We take our turn on picket. Think our battalion will go again tonight. The enemy a strongly fortified and are daily building stronger. We are doing the same thing. Our only way to drive them is to lay siege. Our boys are trying to dig them out & are getting quite close to their battery. There has not been as much firing between the pickets for a day or two & I hope it will continue. So untill one or the other side make an advance. This hunting men, as I used to woodchucks at home, I don't fancy. We have some sweets with the bitter. There are two or three bands in the corps. Two of them are playing now. Yes sir, I hope we may meet again & enjoy the quiet life of Old Warren, but it is very uncertain. Still, will hope for the best. You must not get to impatient. It is no small job to get to Richmond & many a poor fellow will fall by the way. I suppose we are about 8 miles from there; Some say 7...'' Shortly before this letter was written the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery lost over three hundred casualties at Cold Harbor. Sacket survived and was discharged a Sergeant in July 1865. Very good condition.
