King George IV signature as Prince Regent. The signed slip reads: ''In the Name and on the Behalf of His Majesty / George PR''. George IV signed in his father's stead when George III was suffering from a mental illness that historians have attributed to the genetic disease porphria, or to poisoning by arsenic. Verso bears the language: ''We being willing to give Encouragement to all Arts & Inventions which may be for the Public Good are graciously Pleased to condescend to the Petitioner's request…'' George IV succeeded to the throne in his own right upon his father's death in 1820. Measures 7.75'' x 3.25''. Toning, else near fine.
