Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. He writes to his wife, Mamie, dating the letter simply 6 January [1943]. It reads in part: ''My dearest...I've had so much bad news covering a period of weeks and months that any word of your illness would simply get me down...I think I have a bad case of 'Mamie Homesickness Blues'...I've yelped enough about that. I know your days are crowded and so cannot expect as many letters as I'd like - but I'd still like them. About six weeks ago I took a long auto trip when it was cold, rainy, etc. I was not well when I started and during the trip contracted a mild case of flu...I've felt fairly well since then but have never been able to shake the cold completely. I use Kleenex by the bale - and I think I'm running out! Saw Art Nevins last eve. He, Wayne, & Al Gunther are now leaving this hq for another location...I had a nice chat with Art who was upset because he'd had no recent word from Ann. That encouraged me to think that our difficulty was purely 'delivery'. However, this morning I got some more worthless mail, delivered through regular air-mail channels. Sometimes, when I write the notes I wonder when, if ever, you get them. I'm temped at times to have Ernest start a little record, numbering each envelope, so we could eventually tell whether they were all delivered. I love you, sweetheart - have I told you?? Don't forget me - you are all I have. Always your / Ike''. The original envelope is included, postmarked 6 January 1943. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.25''. Light toning and creasing, else near fine.
