Dwight D. Eisenhower WWII autograph letter signed from Algiers. On 4 January [1943] he writes to his wife Mamie, in part: ''...My dearest...Of course there's nothing new for me to say unless I can think of an original way of saying you're quite a gal - only more so - in fact you're the only gal. I sometimes wonder that other women don't tear you limb from limb because you outshine them so definitely. Maybe women are charitable, or blind!...Not long ago [Butch] went with me on a trip. It turned out to be one of those tough ones - we rode 20 hours without stopping except for 1 meal and 2 blowouts. But since he's 10 years younger than I, he may have enjoyed it. I did not! The 20 hour trip followed hard on the heels of a long day of riding & inspecting. We started at 10:00 p.m. & finished the next night at 6:00. I hope Milton could give you some kind of picture of our daily lives. I know you'd like one - but it just seems to be one of those things that cannot be put down on paper. In other words, daily life is 'atmosphere, surroundings and personalities', not a schedule. But since Milton is so observant I think he can supply some of this for you. This week I expect to make another trip, but this time, I hope, in more leisurely fashion. One of the difficulties is in finding the time to do it - usually I have to start days in advance to plan and scheme...When I get home you may have a very old, broken down, man on your hands. And so you'll have to provide the pep for the family. I'll look to you to make me young again - and I love you so much you'll be able to do it...Your Ike.'' Envelope is included bearing his signature, ''Dwight D Eisenhower''. 3pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.25''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.
