Benjamin Champneys / Harrisburg / Pennsylvania'' and signed ''Free / James Buchanan'' at upper right. Postmarked ''Washington City, D.C. / 15 January'' with no year though the style of the postmark dates the free frank to 1847-1849. Buchanan served as Secretary of State from 1845 to 1849, where he helped define the northern border of the United States through his negotiation of the Oregon Treaty in 1846. Measures 5'' x 3''. Mounted and framed attractively beneath an etching of Buchanan to an overall size of 9.75'' x 13''. Near fine.
