American abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe manuscript poem signed, dated 1 August 1882. Stowe paraphrases the poem by George Washington Doane, ''Young & happy while thou art / Not a shadow on thy brow / Not a sorrow in thy heart / Seek the Lord thy Savior now / Your friend Harriet Beecher Stowe / Saco Beach / Aug 1 1882''. Beecher's novel, ''Uncle Tom's Cabin,'' depicted life for slaves in the American south and fueled the debate over slavery that culminated in the Civil War. The 4.25'' x 7'' note is affixed to a 7.25'' x 10'' autograph album page. Minor toning, else very good condition.
