Rare full-length portrait of Native American Sioux Chief Matowaungata, also known as High Bear, circa 1890. Silver gelatin photo measures 5'' x 7'', showing the Lakota Sioux Chief wearing a full-length eagle feather headdress, cartridge belt, beaded wool leggings and beaded moccasins. He stands protective over a young girl, likely his granddaughter, holding a Springfield rifle at his side. Photo has no photographic backstamp, but was likely taken at the Pine Ridge Agency in South Dakota in the late 19th century. Photo a bit light, and with a few smudges to background. Foxing and mounting remnants to verso. Overall very good condition. An uncommon image of the Sioux Chief.
