Hunter S. Thompson Letter Signed From 1966 -- "…Ballantine says they definitely want the Rum Diary, and Random has offered me an advance on anything I want to write except the RD…"

Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed from 1966, when Thompson was on the cusp of literary success with the publication of "Hell's Angels". Here though, on 23 January, he's struggling to make ends meet, writing to his friend Paul Semonin: "Dear Fats -- Am sending out the general bush alarm here. Have just been informed they're not giving me any more money until March 1, the absolute deadline, and if it ain't done then the Random deal [for "Hell's Angels"] is off. Meanwhile my situation here is deteriorating so badly that it can only be described by saying I haven't had any money since you were here…Ballantine says they took the hardcover advance and applied it on my softcover advance. This was the lump I've been counting on to save the day. To get the word on this I had to get another agent and give him 10%…I'm really in serious shit here. Rent 2 months over, car ins. cancelled, etc. This, along with the Playboy failure, brings my loss for the past 3 months to $4500…I appear to be in good but puzzling shape for the long run. Ballantine says they definitely want the Rum Diary, and Random has offered me an advance on anything I want to write except the RD. Even a 'bare-bones idea.' I can't figure it out, but at least I have some options. For jesus sake be careful what contracts you sign. And if the editor seems like a good fellow, get a lawyer at once. Send word quick." He then adds by hand, "& money" along with signing and circling "H". Composed on bright orange paper measuring 8.5" x 11" for strong visual appeal. Folds and small spot of dampstaining at lower left. Near fine condition.
