Hunter S. Thompson postcard letter to his friend Paul Semonin regarding his in-progress ''Hell's Angels'' book, and also mentioning the conflict in Stanleyville, Republic of the Congo. Dated 28 December and postmarked 29 December 1965, Thompson handwrites the address panel in red ink, also underlining his ''HST'' typewritten initials at the conclusion. Letter reads in part, ''...Just read your Nation review and will take the risk of saying it looked damn good. Some where between the big Stanleyville job and this one I think you must have picked up some pointers on organization, focus, etc. (and now of course I expect to hear how the dirty bastards chopped it all up, and what a punk I am for liking it in this mutated form.) Well, what the hell. Maybe it takes a paymaster to teach a man how to stack things...tough, but not crazy or blathering like a lot of the stuff I've sent in recently. Word here is ugly, more of the same. Still not even half through the book and now there is talk of missing the 'spring list', which sounds bad & costly. I am limping along with impaired confidence, the flu and total chaos on the money front. The machine is busting down to nothing: see no hope of getting it fixed...HST''. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.25''. Light wear, else near fine condition.
