Gold watch presented to College Football Hall of Famer John Outland as Coach of Washburn University. The watch was a present from his players after an experimental game vs. Wichita Fairmount on Christmas Day, 1905. After an alarming amount of injuries and deaths during the season, Outland adopted a new set of rules that he tested during this game: teams were to get 10 yards in 3 downs and field goals were awarded higher points from further distances. Although the game ended in a scoreless tie, many spectators were pleased with the pace and accessibility of the game. Most importantly, there were no injuries. Hampden Watch Co. pocket watch has seconds dial and blank dust cover. Measures 2'' in diameter and weighs 110 g., or 3.9 oz. Comes housed inside floral cloth bag with zipper. Includes December 1978 copy of ''The Sporting Scene'' from Topeka, Kansas which details the game on page 35. Watch has broken balance and does not start, otherwise very good condition. With an LOA from the John Outland estate.
