Interesting typed letter signed by Eleanor Roosevelt as First Lady, on White House stationery, to journalist and author Pearl Buck. Dated 27 August 1944, Roosevelt responds to Buck's wire concerning Pedro Albizu Campos, leader of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico. At this time, Campos was serving a sentence for sedition against the United States, and moved to Columbus Hospital in New York because of ill health. Buck was known to have visited Campos at the hospital and advocated for his release. Roosevelt writes, ''...I gave your wire about Dr. Campos to the President and I find: / 'Dr. Campos has consistently refused either to apply for clemency or to comply with the usual probation regulations...He takes the position that any action by him in conformance with the laws of the United States or the orders of a United States court would be inconsistent with his determination in no way to recognize the authority of the United States over himself or over Puerto Rico.' / In view of the above, I am afraid there is nothing I can do...[signed] Eleanor Roosevelt''. Single page letter measures 6'' x 9.25''. Folds, else near fine.
