Stark image of a draft wheel used during the Civil War, the machine that would turn northern men into Union soldiers or, if they could afford it, force them to pay $300 to hire a substitute. The Civil War Military Draft Act, passed in early 1863, was the first conscription act of the United States and highly controversial, leading to the New York City draft riots a few months later. Glass slide is from the New York State Education Department collection, measuring 4'' x 3.25''. Near fine condition.
