Charles Darwin letter signed, dated 23 May 1867, at which time he was correcting the proof of his manuscript on heredity, ''The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication''. Darwin here writes to his financial advisor John Higgins that he's ''glad to hear that the cottages are so nearly finished'', likely referring to his property at Beesby Farm. On stationery from his home in Down Bromley, Darwin writes in full, ''My dear Sir / I beg leave to acknowledge & thank you for the sum of 159.11.2 being half a years rent, less certain charges & the payment of half the cost of the new cottages. I am glad to hear that the cottages are so nearly finished. Believe me, my dear Sir / yours very faithfully / Ch. R. Darwin''. Single page measures 5'' x 8'', with docketing on verso. Darwin purposely signs over a duty stamp at conclusion of letter. Vertical crease, overall very good plus condition.
