Bill-signing pen used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act, a cornerstone of the Civil Rights movement. Signed 2 July 1964, the bill banned discrimination based on color, religion, sex and national origin for the first time in the country's history, including racial segregation in schools, businesses and public facilities. The bill also outlawed unequal application of voter registration requirements, a key component of disenfranchisement for African-American citizens.
Pen is one of approximately 75 bill-signing pens used by President Johnson that day, with another given to Martin Luther King, Jr. and one now in the collection of the Smithsonian. Esterbrook pen with a 2668 Esterbrook nib measures 6.25'' long, housed in original box measuring 7''. Original slip accompanying the pen is also included documenting pen as ''used by the President, July 2, 1964, in signing H.R. 7152''. Clear plastic barrel of pen reads ''THE PRESIDENT - THE WHITE HOUSE'' with ''ESTERBROOK / MADE IN U.S.A.'' appearing on both black grip and nib. Near fine condition.
