Lot #17: George Burns Own Christian Dior Sport Coat, Custom Slacks & Matching Tie

Description

George Burns personally owned sport coat, custom slacks and necktie. The comedian who began in vaudeville became a cornerstone of Hollywood, making an inspiring comeback at age 80 and living to be a centenarian. His Christian Dior jacket is made of wool with black, brown and white checks and is fully lined with silk featuring Dior insignia. The breast pocket is stuffed with a burgundy silk pocket square. Small hole to lining; very good. Grey wool slacks have a label sewn into the waistband identifying them as Sy Devore designs. Burns, along with the Rat Pack, frequented tailor Devore's custom suit house. Burns reportedly spent time in Devore's adjoining barbershop testing new jokes. He remained loyal to the Devore family business even after Sy's death in 1966, as the label on the slacks is dated ''12-2-76''. Belted with a matching grey wool belt. Scattered holes, perhaps from his ever-present cigar, and light staining. Good. Burgundy silk tie is Sulka brand and in very good condition. With tags from Sotheby's.
