Lot #16: Marquis de Lafayette 1830 Letter Signed

Description

From Paris in 1830, French marshal Marquis de Lafayette signed letter to Monsieur Burd as an American general: ''Genl. La Fayette / Paris / 1830''. French-language text to verso translates to: ''The General Lafayette is honored to express his thanks to Mr. Burd. He is very sorry not to be able to take advantage of his gracious offer, but immediately after the royal meeting will return home to LaGrange where he has not been able to return since the 27th of July.'' 27 July 1830 is the day the French Revolution of 1830 began, and one side wanted Lafayette to be the head of state. The royal meeting might possibly be the 9 August session in which Louis Phillippe became King of France. Bears red wax seal. Measures 7.75'' x 6''. Toning, creasing, paper loss along fold lines, and a quarter-sized chip opposite seal. In good to very good condition.
