Lot #68: Ernest Hemingway Letter Signed from 1938 Regarding ''Ken'' Magazine & Being Embezzled -- ''...shocked to find the same guy embezzled me out of 822.00 dollars...''

Ernest Hemingway typed letter signed, datelined Key West, 28 July 1938. Hemingway writes to a struggling author, Paul Drus, who he had been corresponding with regarding Drus' stories for ''Ken'' magazine. In addition to providing encouragement to Drus, ''I hope you sell them all'', Hemingway also references traveling to Spain at the time of the Spanish Civil War and being embezzled by an unnamed person. Letter reads in full,

''Dear Mr. Drus; I turned all your stuff over to my Secretary to forward to Ken who had forwarded it all to me before I went back to Spain last March. I am shocked and horrified to find it was not done. Was also considerable shocked to find the same guy embezzled me out of 822.00 dollars and did a few other things. But that does not help you any. Have finally located everything I believe you sent and return them all to you herewith. / Congratulations on your success and best luck always. / I apologize to you for having inadvertantly [sic] held up your stories. I hope you sell them all. / Yours, [signed] Ernest Hemingway / Key West / July 28/1938''.

Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Small split at lower vertical fold, minor foxing and discoloration. Overall in very good condition with a strong pencil signature by Hemingway. Accompanied by an original pencil sketch of Hemingway measuring 6.375'' x 7.5''.
