George MacDonald signed first U.S. edition of ''At the Back of the North Wind'', the classic 19th century fairy tale. New York: George Routledge & Sons, 1871 in original green boards. MacDonald inscribes the half-title page to his aunt, Eleanor Fisk: ''Mrs. Fisk / for her children / with love from their cousin / George MacDonald''. A Christian minister and fantasy author who greatly inspired Lewis Carroll, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and W.H. Auden, MacDonald here takes his protagonist on a series of adventures with ''Lady North Wind'', whose inscrutable behavior is sometimes confusing, but ultimately produces good in the world. First U.S. edition has all edges gilt, bright gilt embellishments to front board and spine, and 76 illustrations by Arthur Hughes. Measures 5.25'' x 7.25''. Volume has been rebacked, preserving original yellow endpapers. Light shelf wear and slightly cocked spine, but overall in very good condition. Very rare as signed by George MacDonald, here with a familial association.
