Lot #12: Harper Lee Autograph Letter Signed -- ''...My grief compared with yours seems inconsequential...''

Description

Harper Lee autograph letter signed, dated 26 May 1996, to her friend Doris Leapard. In this very sweet letter, Lee writes about the importance of friendship, ''...You'll never know how glad I was to hear from you. I really thought I had lost you...What can I say about Bill's loss? My grief compared with yours seems inconsequential. That, it may be, but it is deeply felt. I know that a cherished, sparkling, devoted friend has left me and I shall miss him for the rest of my days. 'Loyalty' is the word for friendship, and loyal is what you and Bill have been to me. Finding you after so many years has been one of the blessings of my life...Knowing you, I know exactly what is meant by the old saying, because you exemplify it: 'Give her a lemon, and she'll make lemonade'...Much love, Nelle''. 8.5'' x 11'' two page letter is in fine condition, with beautiful penmanship. Accompanying envelope is very good.
