DeWitt Clinton document signed, dated 20 January 1827, during his second term as New York Governor. He appoints Leman Carrier to the rank of lieutenant in the 182nd NY Infantry by signing: ''DeWitt Clinton''. Clinton's political career, including terms as U.S. Senator and New York City Mayor, would end with his death a year later. His name was mockingly attached to ''Clinton's Ditch,'' later known as the Erie Canal, a crucial transport link. Minor paper loss to document has been repaired; separation along folds. Overall very good.
