David Rice Atchison autograph note signed on 31 December 1853. Atchison had the unique distinction of being President for the day of 4 March 1849, after President-elect Zachary Taylor refused to be sworn in on a Sunday, delaying his inauguration until 5 March 1849. Atchison was President pro tempore of the Senate at the time, technically making him President of the United States for that one day. Written while Atchison was President pro tempore of the Senate at the tail end of Taylor's administration, note reads, ''Mr. Fulcomb will send a copy of Senate Doc in relation to Comm. Jones in the Pacific Squadron / D.R. Atchison''. Measures 4.75'' x 3.75''. Archival taped reinforcement to verso, folds, foxing and light chipping. Very good condition.
