Lot #325: Arthur Ashe's Notebook From 1987-1990 -- Filled Out in His Hand With Contacts' Names & Numbers, His Health Information, Bible Quotes, Details of a Scholarship Program, Etc.

Description

Arthur Ashe's address book. Spiral notebook is filled with the names and numbers of Ashe's contacts written in his hand, with scattered random notations to later pages. Famous names making a cameo in the book include Harry Belafonte and Sugar Ray. He records the address for the NAACP, and notes ''World Tennis Magazine'' and ''Life Magazine''. In two places he reminds himself: ''Wimbledon article 2,000 words on the 70's'', once in ink and again in pencil. One page contains the following: ''The achievements of African Americans in sports competition are exemplary and legendary. In particular, success has been concentrated in The Big Five: baseball, football, basketball, boxing, and such...aided in no small part by...facilities in public schools & public parks...'' Another such note reads, ''...I have coronary artery disease...I have become involved with the AHA because many of the related problems are preventable...'' Also, ''I strongly suggest that Adam and his cohorts read every word of 'The Flip Side of Soul' and heed the advice.'' At one point Ashe creates a timeline of his experience with AIDS in the month of December of 1988: ''12/21/88 blood numbers look good again'' and one entry dated 7 August 1989 reads: ''my numbers are back up but I'm beginning to feel permanently and slightly sluggish...'' Several instances of his blood numbers occur throughout the book. Ashe transcribes Biblical verses - three from Revelations and one from John. With much more content, including references to other tennis players, his ''anti-Apartheid'' friends and contacts, a list of personal qualifications he looks for in scholarship applicants, etc. All 128 sheets in the spiral-bound notebook are written upon in Ashe's hand and account for three years of his life, with the first entries dated early May 1987, and the last dated late April 1990. Most sheets are written on both the front and the back, with over 200 pages of content. Measures 9'' x 11''. Toning and wear to edges, else near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
