Original typed poem by Don Materra, South African poet and friend of Arthur Ashe. Poem is part of a typed letter dated 12 May 1975, thanking Ashe for his recent visit. Poem, written specifically for Ashe, reads in part, "…Then, I read of your Dallas triumph / and the tears of some known / yet unfathomable emotion that / overcame your heart, / I tell you, brother, / 9000 miles became a mere instant / and I touched and wept with you…that one man should love another / across the span of land and time…I love you…" Letter is signed by Mattera in type. Document measures 8.25" x 11.75" and is typed on thin onion paper. Horizontal folds, wrinkling and tears to edges. Overall good condition. With an LOA from Ashe's widow.
