Lot #188: Hat Worn by Arthur Ashe During His Famous Arrest Outside the White House in 1992 at a Protest Regarding the Expulsion of Haitian Refugees From the United States

Description

Arthur Ashe's hat worn in his high-profile arrest outside the White House during a protest of the U.S. government's expulsion of Haitian refugees. Ashe's arrest, which took place on 9 September 1992 is well-documented, and photos of Ashe wearing this hat appeared in worldwide press. He died less than six months later. Fittingly, cream color woven hat features a black band with white lettering: ''NAACP''. A label sewn within indicates hat was union-made in the U.S. Measures 12.5'' at its widest and 4.75'' tall. Warping from folding, else near fine. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
