Kern enjoyed a wildly successful career that evolved from composer of Broadway musicals and innovator in the genre, to scorer of Hollywood films, earning 2 Oscars and a total of 8 nominations. Kern's music is known for its very specific relevance to movie plots, to the extent that he resisted his songs being played out of context. Jerome Kern received top billing in "Centennial Summer", and Oscar Hammerstein II provided the lyrics. The film was based on a novel by Albert E. Idell, about a pair of sisters in Philadelphia who fall in love with the same man. Kern is known for such major hits as "Show Boat," "Ol' Man River," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight" and nearly 700 more.
