Hunter S. Thompson autograph letter signed, on a train back home to Louisville after being evicted from his home in Big Sur. Written upon California Zephyr rail line stationery, Thompson writes to his friend Paul Semonin in early November 1961, in part, ''I am crossing the Missippii [sic] - the fat is in the fire. Skidded through Aspen, made contact with P[eggy] Clifford, got drunk & left on next train. Heading for Chi. & then Lou. It's too shitty to explain. I am traveling with 3 guns, 2 gallons of wine, no money, Agar [Thompson's dog] & a big can of gun-powder. I keep waiting for it to blow the side out of the baggage car. / I can't even afford coffee. / Expect to stay in Lou till Jan 1 - must finish Rum Diary in rent-free premises. Sandy [Conklin] in N.Y. I dread arriving & have warned no one - not even home. Expect to hole up in room & make no contact except maybe Logan. Will begin beer-making immediately & thus avoid bars...I will make a long move on Jan 1 or so. Maybe east, maybe west. Presently considering Europe, South Am, Hiwaii [sic] & Vancouver...Mexico, northern Idaho, & a host of others. Send the word on your holdings. H''.
