Carlo Lorenzini (24 November 1826 – 26 October 1890), better known by the pen name Carlo Collodi (Italian: [ˈkarlo kolˈlɔːdi]), was an Italian author, humourist, and journalist, widely known for his fairy tale novel The Adventures of Pinocchio.
The Adventures of Pinocchio (/pɪˈnoʊki.oʊ/ pi-NOH-kee-oh; Italian: Le avventure di Pinocchio [le avːenˈtuːre d̪i piˈnɔkːjo]) (commonly shortened to Pinocchio) is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi, written in Pescia. Walt Disney signed animation cel used in Disney’s 1940 classic “Pinocchio”, the groundbreaking follow-up to the first full length Disney animated film, ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”. Very large cel, featuring Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket, measures 4.5″ x 5.5″, with original background measuring 7.5″ by 9.5″, and mat measuring 15″ x 16″ upon which Disney signs, “To Gorden Crier / Best Wishes / Walt Disney”. Disney gifted Gordon Crier the cel after Crier produced a BBC program about Disney in the late 1940s, at the conclusion of which Disney asked Crier what his favorite cartoon was, to which Crier replied, “Pinocchio”. With Courvoisier Galleries sticker affixed to backing certifying that both the background and cel were used in the filming of “Pinocchio”. Walt Disney Productions stamp appears on mat, above Disney’s signature, reading “original / WDP”. Uniform toning to mat and small amount of abrasion to edges. Cel itself is near fine. With an LOA from Crier’s daughter and a COA from Phil Sears. A rare, special Disney signed cel from one of the classics in animated film, also unusual for its size. Sold for $12,000.
Original animation cel from Disney’s 1939 classic ”Pinocchio,” the follow-up to the first animated film, ”Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” This cel shows Pinocchio together with Mister Geppetto and Figaro in the famous ”Jealous Figaro” scene. Matted by Courvoisier, the official art gallery for Walt Disney Studios during much of the 20th century, artwork measures 6.5” x 6.75, framed to 13.5” x 14.5”. Printed slip affixed to verso reads in part, ”This is an original painting on celluloid, actually used in the Walt Disney Production of Pinocchio. It is one of a select few that have been released to art collectors. The remainder have been destroyed. Copyright 1939…Walt Disney Productions”. Cel is near fine with no cracking. Sold for $8,908.

Walt Disney’s Pinocchio cel. Disney’s second feature-length animated film in 1940 followed on the heels of the wildly successful and groundbreaking ”Snow White.” Cel titled ”Pinocchio & The Cat” was used in filming the thrilling scene when Pinnochio first speaks and woodcutter-turned-puppeteer Gepetto gleefully discovers his beloved creation has the potential to turn into a real human boy. Gepetto’s hands hold Pinnochio up by his red suspenders while the cat, Figaro, watches in amusement. Both Pinnochio and Figaro were drawn by Disney staff animator Eric Larson of ”Disney’s Nine Old Men” core animation team. Measures 7.75” x 7.25”. Matted and framed by Courvoisier Galleries to an overall size of 14.75” x 15.5”. Figaro has shifted from original position and a pencil notation appears at the corner, else cel is near fine. Scratching to frame, else near fine. With original Disney label of authenticity affixed to verso of frame. Sold for $5,407.
Walt Disney ”Pinocchio” Book Signed — With The Signatures of More Than 20 Early Disney Animators
Walt Disney signed ”Pinocchio”, published by Random House: New York: 1939. Hardcover volume is inscribed upon the copyright page in giant bold letters in Disney’s distinctive hand, ”To Al / Best / Wishes / Walt Disney”. A small note appears to the upper right, ”To Al Parke” in an unknown hand, and 1940 has been lightly written at the bottom of the page. Unpaginated children’s story book is illustrated in both color and black and white, and is signed throughout by more than 20 early Disney animators. Bound in pictorial paper boards with blue cloth spine and pictorial endpapers. Measures 8.5” x 11.5”. Ever so slight toning to leaves, cocking to spine and wear to the bottom edges of boards. Near fine. Sold for $3,438.
Rare first edition, first printing of one of the most desired books in the history of literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s ”The Great Gatsby,” published by Charles Scribner’s Sons: New York: 1925, with the nearly impossible to find first printing dustjacket. Bound in dark green cloth boards with title and author’s name blind-stamped to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Francis Cugat’s scarce original unrestored first printing dustjacket has the lowercase ”j” in ”jay Gatsby” on the back panel hand-corrected in ink. Sold for $50,000.

Dashiell Hammett The Thin Man first edition signed. New York: Alfred A. Knopf: 1934. First edition, first printing rare book. Hardcover sans dustjacket. Blue ink inscription on ffep reads: “For Paul Hollister / with best regards / Dashiell Hammett / New York / January 6, 1934.” First printing copy of the very first in Hammett’s iconic series of Nick and Nora detective books, which in turn inspired various movie adaptations, including those starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. Book, measuring 5″ x 7.5″, runs 260pp. Inscription bold and legible, but suffers slightly from ink bleed. Cloth boards feature a stylish theater mask printed in blue ink on the front cover and excellent red and blue spine design. A large but light stain on the front cover and some shelf wear to bottom edges, very mild interior toning, but overall bright. An excellent copy in very good condition. Sold for $9,433.
